Today, i came across a beautiful thought by JK Rowling. "One of the most incredible things about humans is that they can experience things without even being part of a situation."

We can learn from the mistakes that others have made by putting ourselves in their shoes, we can be sad to grieve for someone's pain and similarly we can be happy and gratified on seeing happy souls celebrating their joyous moments.
